Transparency and efficiency – Escarmat’s Model for Technical Collaboration

The customer is naturally an expert in their own field. However, the supplier’s expertise is equally important, and the best solutions are created when both parties bring their know-how to the same table.

According to Mika Lintunen, Plant Manager at the Vikby factory, and Jukka-Pekka Seppänen, Production Manager, engaging in early joint planning with the customer and evaluating component availability provide clearer project scope and improve schedule predictability.

Collaboration Strengthens Step by Step

Escarmat has for a long time been deepening its technical collaboration, especially with long-term partners, with the aim of streamlining project scheduling.

It is essential that the customer shares comprehensive information about the needs of their organization, and in return the supplier’s team supports the customer in understanding the possibilities their work can offer.

– Many of our customers have highly specialized products and demanding technical requirements. Over time, we have learned to understand their needs and expectations very well.

When collaboration matures into a true partnership, we can share our perspectives and engage in conversations about the bigger picture.

– For example, we were able to provide our opinion when one of our key customers updated their software, and we were able to request clarifications on drawings and documents whenever needed. The software update changed the technical layout quite significantly in some areas and introduced new ways of working: the drawing method was updated, and the system now, for instance, automatically generates wiring diagrams.

Weekly Development Meetings and Shared Platforms Streamline Processes

When shared platforms are in use, drawings and project documents flow seamlessly and information stays up to date. Weekly development meetings and open dialogue have also proven to be essential for ensuring that projects progress in line with customer expectations and Escarmat’s available resources.

Collaboration becomes concrete in the weekly meetings, which are attended by a representative from the customer’s design team and typically four experts from Escarmat: two from production, one from design, and one from sales to ensure smooth collaboration.

Greater Transparency and Smoother Technical Interaction

In some cases, collaboration has been further strengthened by adding a monthly review alongside the weekly development meetings, attended by a representative also from the customer’s procurement department. The meetings have been important for maintaining open communication.

– Even though we are in close contact with the customer by phone, Teams, and email, regular meetings ensure that we stay up to date and go through general matters. This also enables us to review development topics outside the ongoing projects together. Our shared goal is to find ways to streamline operations and clarify practices.

Material and Resource Management Supports Delivery Reliability

Material availability has improved, although occasional challenges may still arise. With key customers, it has been agreed that certain materials will be used and kept in stock at the company’s own premises. Escarmat maintains a standard range of specific enclosures, frames, and cables, with defined quantities and sizes.

If a material causes challenges, replacement components can be proposed. There is strong expertise in alternative, readily available, and cost-efficient solutions. In addition, the material selection has been clarified together with the customer, making choices easier and supporting product development.

On the resource side, a multi-skilled model is applied. Employees can be flexibly assigned and transferred between departments. There is also cross-skill capacity between the KT and Vikby factories, which helps in balancing resources.

In some projects, certain work phases are carried out both at Escarmat’s facilities and at the customer’s site. This is the case, for instance, in Ex projects, meaning projects involving potentially explosive atmospheres or otherwise demanding conditions.

– These projects typically involve the manufacturing of the control panel at Escarmat and cable installation work, part of which takes place at our facilities and part at the customer’s site. The mounting plates are assembled at our facilities, and at the customer’s site they are lifted into position and the cabling is completed.

Escarmat’s 2025: A Year of Flexibility and Strong Team Culture

The past financial year has, in many ways, been both balanced and active. Although uncertainty has persisted in the market and some project schedules were delayed, demand remained strong and the order book stable throughout the year.

– We achieved our planned income level and can be pleased with the results: we even slightly exceeded our budget, while sales and production volumes remained at last year’s level. In many respects, our operations have become even more efficient, despite the fact that the past financial year covered only 12 months, compared to 13 the year before, says CEO Kari Olkinuora.

– Above all, the commitment, flexibility, and dedication of our employees have been the cornerstones of Escarmat’s success, something we are truly proud of.

Strong Teamwork Ensured Reliable Deliveries

Throughout the year, we carried out several interesting projects and experienced some busy periods, all of which were successfully managed through teamwork. On the production side, there were times when the pace was particularly fast, and it was precisely then that inter-team cooperation and the drive to meet customer deadlines truly stood out.

Deliveries remained on schedule, even though material availability and project timing occasionally posed challenges. This speaks volumes about the quality and professionalism of Escarmat’s work.

The number of personnel has remained roughly the same, or even increased a little, while efficiency has improved and collaboration between teams has continued to strengthen. The focus has been particularly on training, employee well-being, and leadership to ensure that everyone receives the support they need and has the opportunity to develop. In addition, attention has been paid to coping at work and fostering a sense of community, as even small actions in everyday life make a difference, they are what create a good atmosphere and a strong culture of working together.

Challenges and Lessons

The year once again provided valuable lessons in flexibility, the importance of communication, and the ability to anticipate change. Market uncertainty, shifting project schedules, and component availability challenged Escarmat to develop its processes and become even more agile.

– One of the most significant and insightful experiences of the year was the leadership training carried out with Hälsa. The program provided fresh perspectives on leadership and helped strengthen the collective work of our management team. It offered concrete tools for everyday leadership and deepened our shared understanding of how we can best support our employees, states the COO Tomi Korkeavaara.

– We have learned to value inter-team communication and openness even more. When information flows smoothly and leadership is consistent, we can react quickly and keep our promises to customers. Amid it all, it has been great to see that the spirit has remained strong, a clear reflection of our solid culture and shared direction.

Together Towards Even Better Performance

Throughout the year, production development has been pursued with determination. Investments in new tools and systems have been made thoughtfully, resulting in improved efficiency and quality management.

A significant step forward is the plan to bring all operations under one roof. This will streamline the flow of information, minimize unnecessary transitions, and strengthen the sense of community. In addition, order book management and production planning have been further developed to better respond to project fluctuations and customer needs

– Above all, we are proud of our employees and how everyone has remained committed to quality, safety, and a positive working atmosphere, even during a busy year. Occupational safety has stayed at an excellent level, and the commitment of the employees is clearly visible in everyday work, Korkeavaara points out.

– We have also been particularly pleased with the feedback received from our customers: our NPS score of 78 reflects trust and long-term collaboration. We are equally proud to have joined the MAKE ecosystem this year, which further strengthens our collaboration and continuous development.

– With the new Escarmat Arena scheduled for completion in December, we will be able to support youth sports and the local community, which is important and genuinely meaningful to us.

Confidently Looking Ahead to Next Year

Olkinuora and Korkeavaara describe their outlook for next year as cautiously positive and, above all, hopeful. The order book for early 2026 looks solid, and new customers and development projects are already on the horizon.

– The coming year will bring new opportunities and likely some challenges as well, but strong team culture, skilled personnel, and continuous development will carry us far. We will continue working to ensure that Escarmat remains not only a reliable partner for its customers, but also the best possible workplace for its own employees.

– We are therefore moving toward the future with confidence, together as one team.

Escarmat Supports Youth Sports in Vaasa with the Escarmat Arena

This winter, junior football players in Vaasa will see a much-needed improvement in their training conditions when the Escarmat Arena project by Vaasan Palloseuran Juniorit ry will be built along Silmukkatie, on the border between Huutoniemi and Klemettilä.

The Significance of the Partnership for Escarmat

Escarmat Oy is the main partner of the project and continues its long-term commitment to supporting children’s and youth sports. The new arena name represents an important partnership for Escarmat and an opportunity to combine resources to develop junior football precisely where the need is greatest.

The project strengthens Escarmat’s role as a responsible company that supports youth, sports, and the community over the long term.

– The well-being of our employees and their families is one of our core values. Supporting the hobbies of children and young people is also an investment in the well-being of our employees, their families, and the entire region. Escarmat wants to be an active supporter, not just a sponsor. Collaboration with VPS Juniorit ry is a natural next step for us, and we appreciate the opportunity to act as a partner in this project, says Escarmat’s Chief Operating Officer, Tomi Korkeavaara.

The arena measures 88 by 62 meters and features artificial turf, allowing football players to practice year-round in any weather.

The Significance of the Partnership for VPS Juniorit

The goal of the Escarmat Arena project is to improve the winter training conditions for junior football players in the Vaasa region, as the current facilities are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of the rapidly growing number of enthusiasts in the area. Through our partnership, winter training conditions for football in Vaasa will take a significant step forward.

– It is wonderful that the Vaasa region has companies like Escarmat, which consistently support children’s and youth sports and contribute to the development of sports facilities. For VPS Juniorit ry, Escarmat’s involvement in the hall project from the very beginning was crucial. Later, we learned that the opportunity to purchase the football facility from Village Shop in Tuuri would not have remained open for very long, as there were other interested buyers. Thanks to Escarmat’s support, the financial uncertainties surrounding the project were significantly reduced, enabling us to make quick decisions and proceed with the purchase. It could even be said that without Escarmat, having a new football hall in Vaasa for the coming winter would have been nothing more than a dream. A big thank you to Escarmat, and especially to Kari and Tomi, for making dreams come true, says the Chairman of the Board of VPS Juniorit ry Jaakko Antila.

The project is progressing well, but its implementation still requires additional funding, for which active work is currently being done. New partners are hoped to join in supporting local sports and being part of a project that increases visibility.

Escarmat arena will be available for use by the partner clubs of VPS juniors, and its doors are expected to open at the end of December.

Escarmat provided a main switchboard for Outomatic’s project

Outomatic Oy, based in Rauma, offers electrical design and contracting services for both industry and residential customers.

In an interview with Escarmat, the company’s CEO, Tomi Koivisto, described how the business grew from small electrical installation jobs into larger electrical contracting projects. Their first collaboration with Escarmat was a success, involving the delivery of a main switchboard for Outomatic’s end customer’s new laboratory facility in Central Finland.

Outomatic had not previously worked with Escarmat, but Koivisto had come across the company’s high-quality switchboards in earlier projects, and the name had stuck with him. When it came time to request quotations, Escarmat stood out and was ultimately selected.

Project progress and challenges

– There are always challenges in projects; they are unavoidable, and this project was no exception. What truly matters, however, is how those challenges are managed and resolved, as that says far more about the project’s success. If a project is completed in a way that leaves all parties with a positive experience, then it can be called a success, notes Koivisto.

– In the original plans, the customers’ needs were carefully considered to minimize changes and approval rounds. In practice, however, things turned out differently. The end customer ultimately requested much more to be included in the project compared to the initial idea, and the size of the main switchboard essentially doubled from the original.

Of course, it is never ideal when a project undergoes numerous changes and additions along the way, with drawings needing to be revised multiple times. This naturally resulted in more work and an extended schedule, adding extra pressure to an already busy spring.

Collaboration in Practice

Despite the large number of changes and multiple rounds of revisions, the change management was handled excellently, and the end customer was also very satisfied.

– Both the design and production teams handled the project excellently: the design team responded smoothly to drawing updates, and production took care of ordering new components according to the end customer’s change requests, Koivisto mentions.

Koivisto states that communication with Escarmat was easy and smooth. Emails were always answered promptly, and he could easily reach them by phone. He also considers it is worth mentioning that the customer was able to communicate directly with the designer and the production manager, not only through the sales representative. Koivisto personally visited Vikby premises to inspect the distribution board, which was arranged without difficulty. Schedules were agreed upon flexibly, and the inspection was carried out without unnecessary delays. Outomatic delivered the main board to the end customer on time, and the solution has proven to be effective even under the demanding conditions of laboratory use.

Prospects for Future Collaboration

Koivisto clearly sees Escarmat as a supplier for Outomatic in the future.

– We have been well recognized as customers, and our needs have been met. From time to time, there are custom orders, and in those cases a request for a quote is also sent to Escarmat. Whenever a distribution board or enclosure is needed, we request a quote from Escarmat.

A Unified Leadership Culture Reinforces Escarmat’s Quality Promise.

Escarmat has systematically developed its leadership and supervisory practices. Last autumn, the management team and supervisors participated in Hälsa’s six-month leadership training program, during which they jointly defined a framework for the company’s leadership. The training focused on motivational leadership, enhancing supervisors’ self-awareness, providing constructive feedback, and fostering collaboration among supervisors.

A common thread for leadership and supervisory work

Strengthening a unified leadership culture required clarifying and developing supervisor work practices. An employee survey indicated a positive workplace atmosphere, and the goal was to ensure leadership practices supported this at every level. The survey highlighted the need to enhance feedback practices and strengthen collaboration between the KT and Vikby locations, thus improving communication and consistent ways to support the success of the entire organization.

Ten jointly defined cornerstones of leadership

During the training, Escarmat’s leadership direction was collectively defined, outlining the type of leadership the organization aspires to and values.

– Working in groups was effective, as everyone was able to express their thoughts and answer key questions: Which existing elements support our leadership vision, and which hinder it? What are our core values, and where do we set our boundaries? This process led to the formulation of concise leadership principles – Escarmat’s ten cornerstones, explains Escarmat’s HR manager Minna-Leena Kniivilä.

Leadership is built on self-awareness and collective support

Building a unified leadership culture began with the leadership team, as a group, and all supervisors, as individuals, recognizing their strengths and areas for development, enjoying leadership by leveraging their own strengths, and staying motivated to grow. Methods and tools are already available, but they must be understood and willingly applied – additionally, new ones are also needed.

– The coaching gave everyone plenty of new insights to consider, and I believe it will strengthen cooperation and peer support among supervisors, Minna-Leena commented.

The Workplace Big Five tool was used during the training to deepen self-awareness and enhance teamwork. It helped individuals and teams identify their natural strengths, preferred working styles, and comfort zones within the workplace.

The training highlighted the importance of peer support and networks in developing leadership and strengthening a shared direction. Once you have identified your own strengths and areas for development, it becomes easier to draw on the expertise of your colleagues – learning directly from those whose strengths align with your own development needs.

The sparring pair exercises proved highly beneficial and continuing them as part of everyday work was considered important. These discussions do not have to be limited to occasional encounters – they can evolve into more permanent sparring pairs or groups, where supervisors support one another and challenge each other’s thinking.

By speaking the same language, we continue to improve quality

Escarmat invests in leadership practices because a unified leadership culture supports continuous development in quality and performance. Clear operating procedures help personnel perform their tasks efficiently and with high quality. Unified leadership enhances engagement and commitment, which in turn improves quality, reduces errors, and costs, and promotes customer satisfaction, a positive working atmosphere, and ongoing development.

Making the cornerstones of leadership visible in everyday work

The jointly defined cornerstones of leadership will be made visible in everyday work. When these principles guide daily activities, they reinforce a unified organizational culture and seamless cooperation.

– Of course, there is still much practical implementation ahead, requiring conscious commitment, open dialogue, and continuous interaction at all organizational levels. It is, in fact, the leaders’ people’s skills that play a crucial role here, Minna-Leena reflects.

Leadership development never ends – it lives in daily work

Strengthening a unified leadership culture is an ongoing process at Escarmat. When the jointly agreed-upon principles become visible in everyday work, they support effective decision-making, cooperation, and high-quality performance. In this way, leadership supports Escarmat’s promise of quality every day.

“Practice leads to results, and small steps lead to success and learning”.

Things to consider when buying an electrical or automation cabinet

Our Sales Manager, Kimmo Piirto, is an experienced expert in cabinet manufacturing. Below, Piirto shares three tips to keep in mind when requesting a quote for an electrical or automation cabinet.

These tips will help ensure a smooth quoting process!

1. Contact early and share your timeline

It’s best to contact Escarmat as soon as you need cabinet manufacturing. We can assist even in the design phase, for example, by helping select the appropriate components.

When requesting a quote, be sure to mention by when the cabinet should be ready, and also when you expect to receive the quote.

– If the project timeline isn’t exactly known, that’s okay. The main thing is to provide us with an estimate so we can plan the delivery time accordingly, Piirto explains.

2. Specify the scope of delivery

It’s essential to clearly outline what the delivery includes in your quote request. Do you only need cabinet manufacturing according to pre-existing designs, or should design services be included in the offer? Will the customer be sourcing active devices or special components themselves?

– In the quote request, it’s good to include a list of components that the customer will be providing, as well as those the manufacturer is expected to procure. Special components often require customization or configuration already during the order phase.

A comprehensive description of the scope also helps the manufacturer with pricing and planning the delivery schedule.

3. Describe the details

It is recommended to include as much information as possible regarding the electrical and mechanical properties of the cabinet in your quote request.

– For electrical properties, it’s important to specify the nominal voltage, nominal current, and short-circuit currents. For mechanical properties, key factors include the size of the cabinet or the reserved installation space, the protection class, and the color. The type of cabinet is also crucial. Is it, for example, an enclosure, a cabinet, or a modular cabinet?

It’s also helpful to note the environmental requirements and the target country, as these can influence the cabinet’s features.

– At Escarmat, we also offer UL-certified and Atex-approved electrical and automation cabinets. We have expertise in manufacturing hundreds of different types of cabinets, so feel free to ask our sales team about your options.

Final thoughts

If all the specifications aren’t clear from the start, don’t worry – you can always rely on the expertise of Escarmat’s sales team.

– We’re happy to assist our customers. Escarmat is also flexible. You don’t have to lock in the design from the start, as we can still make changes during production if needed, Piirto advises.

After the quote request, the salesperson will usually contact the customer to ask clarifying questions. They will then check prices, availability, and schedules, and finally send the quote to the customer.
